This book is based in the future and in the future when you turn 16 you have to go and get a surgery done to make you pretty. Tally is very excited about the surgery until she meets Shay who doesn't want to have the surgery done. The week before Shay's 16 birthday Shay runs away to a place called the Smoke, where everyone is "ugly". Tally has to either betray her friend and bring her back or Tally has to stay ugly forever.
This book is kind of confusing in the beginning but if you continue on this book is very good. The best part about this book is the description and the originality of the plot. I didn't want it to end! I also didn't have to because this is a trilogy. (1st-Uglies, 2nd-Pretties, 3rd-Specials) I have read the first 2 books and want to read the last one very badly!
